<Did you see the look Terrance sent your way?> Rae asked as Francesca exited the sandboxed data mining room, and followed her peers to the secured offices several stories underground. <That man does not like you, not at all.>

Francesca sent Rae a mental wink as the lift descended. <Good to know I have the evil witch routine down pat. >

The lift opened to a satellite executive suite that had been built for just such occasions as this: moments of pomp and ceremony that the Hegemony traditionally conducted planetside, away from their working headquarters on Brilliance Station.

The room where they’d met Enfield was, in truth, no boardroom at all. Instead, it was equipped with every possible form of surveillance the Hegemony had to hand.

None but the VPs themselves, their overseers, and their adjuncts had access to the true boardroom. The one where they conducted their most secret and confidential meetings was in orbit around the planet.

She followed Cyrus inside, making her way with a studied casualness over to a plush seating arrangement. Maneuvering the board into a trip up to the Vale had been the easy part; this next was a bit trickier.

<You did have a chance to bring the rest up to speed on the plan?> she inquired yet again, and Rae shot her a scolding look.

<Of course I did, silly.>

<Well, forgive me for triple-checking on this before I stick my neck out and get it chopped off,> she returned, although her words had no heat behind them. <You’re sure Quincy and Wallis can be party to this charade without it triggering their shackling bonds?>

<Just don’t address them at all, and they should be fine,> Rae instructed. <It’s not like you’re asking them to actively engage. If they remain passively quiet, the shackles shouldn’t compel them.>

Francesca sent her a mental nod before turning and pinning Cyrus with a questioning look. Infrastructure was in charge of the company’s tech division, which meant that the surveillance systems of the room where the meeting had been held fell to him as well.

“So what did we learn about our new friends just now?” she inquired as she took a seat on a nearby lounge.

“You mean other than that Enfield’s wife is someone I plan to do my damndest to seduce?” Gavin interposed, laughing salaciously as he walked past. “Woman’s not half-bad for a foreigner.”

Currin snorted. “You’re just bored and looking for a flavor that’s different than what you can get here at home. The silver one’s cuter, but the captain—” He took a seat across from Francesca, slinging an arm along the sofa and winking at Gavin suggestively. “Now there’s a prime specimen. That one’s got my vote.”

“Hands off,” Berit admonished, slapping Currin’s arm as she passed behind the sofa on her way to the bar. “He’s all mine.”

Weary of the innuendo and byplay, Francesca attempted to get the conversation back on track.

“Well…?” she prompted, sitting up and looking expectantly at Cyrus as the man settled into a chair opposite her.
